AMI Advanced Machine Interface - ADR's BTR

BTR Abbr. Behind the Tape Reader - interface to CNC originally used by tape readers
BUS DNC wiring scheme without hubs - machines wire in daisy-chain fashion
Client Consumer of a service such as a LanTap using FTP services
CNC Abbr. Computer Numerical Control - Computer inside a machine, controlling its motion
DNC Abbr. Distributed Numerical Control - non centralized processing of numerical control information
DNC Server A computer supplying files to and from shop floor workstations or machines
Drip-feed The process of sending data to a CNC as it runs - block by block
EIA Abbr. Refers to RS244 code format used by older CNC to code stored programs
Ethernet LAN hardware interface - refers to protocol used to communicate
Factory NetNetwork of machines on the shop floor - refers to connections between machines and computers
FTP Abbr. File Transfer Protocol - protcol used to access files on internet and intranets
Hub A device which connects cables together providing network communication between cabled devices
Intranet TCP/IP network used within a company - using Local Area Network (LAN)
Internet TCP/IP network also known as the World Wide Web.
ISO Refers to RS358 code format used by newer CNC to code stored programs
LAN Abbr. Local Area Network - typically an Ethernet network of computers and devices
LanTap Abbr. LAN TCP/IP Asynchronous serial Port adapter
Multi-drop Multiple devices sharing a single connection - using serial data communications
PUNCH CNC output device - parallel to tape punch or serial output
Router A hub device which selectively sends data between its ports
RS232 Electrical specification: Single ended +/- 12V signals for two party communication
RS422 Electrical specification: Balanced 0-5V signals for multi-party communication
READER CNC input device - originally a tape reader, now BTR
Remote Remote Access of DNC server - file transfers initiated by client
Server Provider of a service - such as an computer supporting FTP service
Single-dropMultiple devices electrically connected to a hub - one device per hub connection.
